Featured Artist for January 2007!
From Matt:
Music has always been a huge part of my life. And I have always been able to sing. According
to my parents, even when I was just a toddler I was using my dad’s extra-large t-shirts as choir robes
and standing on the fireplace pretending to be in the church choir, just singing my heart out. I began
playing the piano when I was in second grade and quickly became very proficient at the instrument. I
constantly wanted to do more with my music, and began playing the clarinet and flute in junior high.
By the time I entered high school, I was considered one of the best clarinet players in the state of
Texas, and began playing in professional bands and orchestras to gain experience and earn money.
Though it had been overshadowed by my instrumental journey, my passion for singing was still ever
present, and one day my church choir director asked me if I would be willing to play keyboard and sing
both lead and background vocals in the Saturday night praise band, and I quickly jumped at the
opportunity. When I would sing, it was the most exhilarating feeling in the world, watching the people
singing along with you, dancing, and just having a good time. I loved every minute of it. As my high
school years came to an end, I had to leave the church praise band to attend college full time. I was
devastated when I wasn’t able to sing, and after a year as a clarinet performance major at college, I
realized that my true musical passion was indeed singing and that it was what I wanted to do for the
rest of my life. I decided to take a year off from college and concentrate on achieving my musical
goal. I don’t feel I wasted my year at college because I learned so much about the different aspects
of music; such as theory, aural training, orchestration, composing, music history, and performing. I
will be able to apply these elements to any musical form or genre I pursue. Over the last few months,
I have taken every opportunity that I can to perform at local bars and events, and each time I sing,
it is just as exhilarating as the first time I performed live.

From Sing Your Life:
Matt is just 19 years old and is emerging as a wonderful Country and Gospel artist here in
Corpus Christi. He also writes songs and has recorded several times in Nashville. As his teacher I can
tell you, he works very hard, has an excellent work ethic, and is highly respected among musicians
because of the musicianship he has acquired from his musical education. I cannot stress enough the
necessity of learning an instrument and knowing the music you are singing, people!
