The preferred format for playing behind a vocalist is the lead sheet which contains the melody, the chords and the lyrics, nothing else. Sheet Music is really someone else's interpretation of the song transcribed for a pianist. But Lead Sheets allow the accompanist to interpret the way you and he/she decide. And they are alot easier for an accompanist to follow too!
